Many of my friends, colleagues and aquaintences have asked me HOW does someone became successful. This seems to be a question often asked and I can only answer this question though my own personal experiences.
First of all everyone has their own definition of success however when someone is usually asking about the HOW to's of becoming sucessful they're typically referring to financial gain. So how does someone become successful? Many of us dream about becoming entrepreneurs one day and owning our own business but most of us never start so why is that?
I remember when I started my first company 10 years ago, I had no experience running my own business and no college degrees. I was hired by my employer as a General Manager, fired then rehired with promisees of becoming a partner but before the partnership was ever formed I was fired again.
The pain from that experience led me down the road of starting my own business. I remember at that time I had $8,000 in my savings account and a $2,500 mortgage. I was scared as hell and my negative thoughts were coming at me from all angles. It made more sense to just get a job because all of my fears where setting in and had I estimated I had three months of living expenses (if I was lucky). How was I going to make enough money in three months to cover my own expenses let alone start a business?
The pain from my previous experince was so intense that I made a committed decision that I would never work for someone else again. I can relate this decision when I moved out of my parents house at 19 years old. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was scared moving away from the safety net but how many of us said, "come hell or high water I will never move back in to my parents house"? Why is that? Because if you did not only would it be embarrassing but it would be considered failing and worse your parents would know of it. Anthony Robbins refers to this as burning your boats.
1. You have to start!
So that's what I did, I started my first company in the office cleaning business. Why? Because my girl friends father owned one and he was doing very very well. So I figured why not? The investment was minimal and I didn't have any money anyways.
2. Don't try to figure everything out before you even start.
You will never know what will happen or what problems you will face once you get started. Many experts have said the 5 year business plan is a thing of the past. As a matter of fact I had no business plan at all, my only plan was to make money to pay my mortgage and bills. I learned later on that most very successful business people never had a business plan, Grand Cardone and Kevin Harrington never had business plans either so don't worry about having everything "just perfect" before starting.
3. You can not fail if you don't ever give up.
You have to keep going, no matter what unless you really are willing to accepting moving back into your parents house? Well when I start enchanting my first major set backs I couldn't move back into my parents house because there wasn't a home to move back into. Not only that I was also living outside of the county and my visa wouldn't even permit me to gain employment aside from working for my company. I had no boats even if I wanted one, I didn't even have a life vest, it was sink or swim. What was I going to do, become homeless? I continued on although my first business failing beyond my control while I'm in another County. I was devastated, crushed and heart broken.
4. Learn from your failures
Sometimes your life greatest failures become your greatest success, it's hard to connect the dots in the moment but looking back this was one of my most valuable experiences. I continued on with my new start up in the US and learned from my first business failing. It was mainly because the structure of my company was build on a foundation of sand so this was my opportunity to start over and build a solid foundation.
In summary remember that you have to start and you don't have to get everything right the first time. You will encounter set backs no matter what so be ready for them and remember never give up. Learn from your short comings and build from those experiences.
Success is the manifestation of the image you hold of yourself in your mind, you must have a vision of your life and of yourself. Continue to grow, continue learning and stay hungry.
